I've spent a lot of time watching good people work themselves into the ground.
Not because they're bad at business. Because they're too good at caring about the dogs, the land, the guests, the bread, the community, and not enough hours left over to care for the business underneath all of it.
I noticed the pattern long before I had a name for it. The people doing the most meaningful work were almost always carrying the heaviest, messiest load. Missing systems. Bottlenecks nobody had time to fix. Good intentions held together with sticky notes and sheer will.
So that became the work I wanted to do: build the quiet stuff that makes the meaningful stuff possible.
I spent my career behind the scenes building systems, solving problems, smoothing out customer experiences, and turning "we've always just done it this way" into something that actually works. Not glamorous work. But the kind that gives people their time back.
That's Good Roost.
I'm the one who notices the loose fence, the missing trail marker, the easier way through so you don't have to be the one always noticing. That's the Curious Hen in me: always wandering a little farther down the trail, always asking, "could this work better?"
Because here's what I believe: good people deserve businesses they actually enjoy running. Not ones that quietly consume the life they were trying to build in the first place.

Every good trail has a teacher. Mine is a dog.
When I adopted him, his name was Bumblebee.
Before I ever thought about business systems
or missing trail markers, he was the one teaching
me to notice things: the fork in the path, the moose just past the treeline, the storm rolling in before I'd felt the first drop.
He's logged more miles with me than anyone. And if the Curious Hen is the spirit behind how Good Roost works, Bumblebee, who everyone knows better as Ben, is where I first learned to pay that kind of attention at all.
You'll spot him in small places around here: a little bee, always somewhere nearby. Because the best hiking partners don't need the spotlight. They just make sure you don't miss the good stuff.
